Millions of people suffer from occasional or frequent heartburn, and it can really put a damper on daily life and special occasions. So what to do? Get that RX prescription, start popping OTC pills or search for natural antacid remedies?

In this day and age, many of us prefer to turn to natural remedies that help the body deal with whatever problem or imbalance we are experiencing. And that is great – if we can find something that is safe and works. A quick review of natural antacid remedies from many sources reveals a long list of things to try: from almonds, aloe vera and apple cider vinegar, via bananas and chewing gum, to turmeric and vegetable juices. Do they work? Maybe. Maybe for some people. For most natural antacid remedies, there is no clinical research data to support their effectiveness. But there is usually little harm in trying them, so why not?

The same goes for the lifestyle changes that are often recommended – and certainly worth trying – if you are experiencing heartburn. For instance, here are some tips for changes that may help:

  • Eating smaller meals
  • Leaving 2-3 hours between eating and going to bed
  • Avoiding spicy and greasy foods, coffee, citrus and tomato products and other foods that are more likely to trigger heartburn
  • Raising the head end of your bed, in a safe manner, to let gravity help push back against heartburn

Beyond lifestyle changes and natural antacid remedies, there is a third option to consider: a more natural antacid.  Brainard’s Blueberry Antacid is a great example. It provides quick and natural relief from heartburn and indigestion, yet is based on natural ingredients like blueberry fiber and fruit extracts. It is gluten free, non-GMO and vegan, and it contains NO calcium carbonate, unlike leading OTC medications.

Last but not least, some people who have heartburn symptoms often and for longer periods of time may have a more serious problem called Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease, or GERD. If you think you may have GERD, please consult your doctor.
